User pages make communication among editors easier in a wiki. Logged in users have a user page and talk page on every wiki. Unregistered users are not allowed to have userpages, because only logged in users can edit pages in the User namespace, but are free to create an account to have one. You can find your own userpage at Special:Mypage.

User pages are not home pages, but a way of organizing the work that you are doing on a particular wiki and a way of helping other editors to understand with whom they're working.

Like any page on a wiki, your user page can be edited by any logged-in user. However, because a user page belongs to a specific person, it is expected that others will not edit except to make minor corrections, improvements, or to revert vandalism.

What to put on your userpage

Your userpage may contain your wiki work, some userboxes, and some allowed personal information. On most wikis, people add information about themselves, such as contact information, areas they excel in, their interests, likes and dislikes, where they live, and so on.

You can also use your user page to help you to use a wiki more effectively: you can make a "to do" list, list works in progress, leave reminders or messages, post useful links, and so on. Many users use a sandbox page to work on new content before putting the page in the main wiki space. Act with some restraint when editing user pages, e.g. only make changes where they are invited by the creator.

Many wikis have userboxes that you can use on your user page to express certain interests and preferences. See About PCs Wiki:Userboxes to see the many userboxes available on this wiki. In addition, there are a number of templates that can be used to describe a About PCs Wiki character.

Personal information

When revealing personal information about themselves, editors should always be cautious of the information that they release. This page provides guidance regarding what personal information editors should and should not give out. While these tips are not required to be followed, it is strongly recommended for the safety of each editor, especially for minors. If you see someone posting not allowed personal information, please email or notify an oversighter to request that the edit is overseen.

If you see someone posting their account's password, contact an steward to request global locking of the account before someone innocent does login to the account and cause damage on the wiki, and an oversighter to suppress the edit. If the account has any advanced permissions (for example admin or bureaucrat), please block the account and remove those rights from the account temporarily until the account is returned to the original owner.

  • It is allowed to reveal one's first name or nickname.
  • It is allowed to reveal one's age.
  • It is allowed to reveal one's gender.
  • It is allowed to reveal one's country and/or state of residence.
  • It is allowed, but not recommended to upload a picture of oneself.
  • It is not allowed to reveal one's last name.
  • It is not allowed to reveal one's city, address, or other information that would help specifically locate one.
  • It is not allowed to reveal both parents' full names.
  • It is not allowed to reveal anything that one's parents do not want one to.
  • It is not allowed to reveal one's I.P address.
  • It is not allowed to reveal other personal identifying information.
  • It is strictly not allowed to reveal your accounts password.*

The less one reveals about oneself, the safer one is. This should always be kept in mind when posting personal information about oneself.

Editors should not post personal, non-public information about other editors; this is a warnable or even blockable offense. If you se that, please alert an admin so they can hide the edit. If it is very sensitive personal information, please request that the edit is overseen.

Personal pictures

Personal pictures, of real life should generally not be uploaded into the wiki's filespace, and will usually be deleted. If a similar image already exists in the article a new image may also be deleted, so don't abuse this narrow exception either. The About PCs Wiki is not a personal image web hosting service or photo gallery.

Wiki policy suggests that images of this nature should be uploaded to public image aggregation websites such as Photobucket, Imgur, or Imageshack and can then be shown on the user page by entering the URL path in the page source. If you are having difficulty displaying images, contributors to this wiki are encouraged to contact the administrators of this wiki for technical assistance. Not all websites will be permitted to be displayed in this manner, and will be evaluated on a case by case basis. Any images that are displayed in this manner should furthermore be available under licensing terms that permit their duplication.

Formatting

Users are free to use html and css to format their userpages as they wish, but the formatting must not make it difficult to access system links found in the side bar, the header, or the footer. See Project:Customising_user_pages.

Not allowed content

  • Pornography is NOT allowed anywhere on the wiki, including on user pages, this wiki should be for all ages. Any pornographic content or images will be deleted and will result in an instant permanent block from editing.
  • Spam/advertising is not allowed, we dislike advertising and links to random websites, and users who advertise will be blocked and the user page deleted.
  • Using the user page as a blog or website is not allowed.
